History

The Loyal Convenience Lodge of Oddfellows was founded in 1832 and formally opened at what was the Duke of Wellington in Moorend, built around 1800, which the following year was renamed The Oddfellows Arms.

The building had a top story added for use as a meeting room. There was a dinner to celebrate the first anniversary of the lodge and this event is shown in the accounts book; “45 dinners at 1s.3d, 5 dinners to women at 6d.”

The Lodge had 59 members in 1838 and had made such progress that the accounts showed a credit balance of £116. Sick benefit was paid at 10s a week. In 1851 the Devonshire Arms was purchased by the Lodge and activities were transferred there soon afterwards.

The history book tells us that it was called the Duke of Wellington in 1832 and changed to the Oddfellows in 1833.
